"I've been a big Genesis fan ever since..." and the exquisitely banal tone is sustained at peak level - a peak whose rarefied air of fandom can be breathed in over and over.
"... and ''Sussudio" (great, great song; a personal favourite)". A personal favourite indeed.
oooh I would have been all in for this one, Star Wars is the most garbage Fandom in existence besides maybe MLP or Steven Universe. what kind of shit for brains collectively bullies a six year old?
I like the parallels between religion and secularism. I don't think enough people talk about that even in today's world when church attendance is dropping but we just supplant that with worshiping this idea of "self" in our everyday existence. I like the articulation of fanatic and how a idea of "fanatic" is in fact sovereign in nature.
As a teenager, I would get so obsessed with some intellectual property that I would try to buy as many external signifiers of the fandom as I could afford. This never worked, and I always felt thirsty. Over the course of my 20s, I stopped doing this, and I started to feel disappointed before spending my money.
I had a similar experience as a teenager, but by age 17 I wised up. I think this is why I hold adult nerds in such contempt-- If I could start to see the scam as a young idiot, why can't they?
This was the white-hot poker to the psyche I needed. And to think I’ve actually spent real time as an adult reading “analyses” on who would win in a fight between Goku and Superman.
Interesting. Places too much faith in "proper" Art. There's no Art or Human activity that can't be shredded by gearing up (or being geared up) by Dissapointement Engine.
DX Animal put into words what I have always felt
My brother.
Fandom: Patrick Bateman's Genesis essay begins:

I mean he's right about "Sussudio" being a great song at least
